A Beetle Is Practically a Collection of Mirrors
Round bodywork turns light into a series of small surprises.

The Volkswagen Beetle may be the friendliest shape in automotive history for teaching reflection. Put a few curved metal surfaces together—a domed roof, rounded hood, bulging fenders—and a camera suddenly has a complete introductory course in optics.
A Security Mirror in the Studio
Look across the gold Beetle’s rounded roof and you see several reflected rectangular lights fitted into one small curved surface. This is an everyday convex-mirror effect. A rounded mirror shows a broad field by compressing the apparent size of everything it reflects. The domed roof is not a true spherical optical mirror, but the similarity makes its behavior easy to recognize. The windshield, by contrast, provides a straighter, smaller reflected stripe. Two adjacent parts of the same gold car return two quite different versions of the room. That is an optics lesson you can read directly from the artwork.
A Convex Roof, A Wide World
On this miniature, the roof swells upward like the back of a spoon, while the front fenders fall away in rounder, tighter curves. A rectangular light source can appear compressed over the crown and stretched along the side. There is no single studio rectangle you can trace perfectly across the whole car; each local curvature writes a different version of it.
Those patterns are not painted onto the car. The surface is acting like a distorted mirror, reflecting the studio around it. Move a reflector a few inches and a broad highlight may jump from one part of a fender to another.
Under the side windows, the gold door grows darker before the swollen rear fender brightens again. That transition shows how the car can look playful without being flat. The black tires and simple bumpers set practical boundaries for all those curving golden highlights.
Volkswagen designed a car to be simple. Point a light at it, and the roof hands you the whole room.
